More Than Curb Appeal: Why Landscaping is Important
September 1, 2016
The beautiful Alphonse Karr Bamboo is an adaptable and versatile plant, unique and easy to maintain. Thriving in hot climates and full to partial sun, this clumping bamboo is perfect for Florida landscaping.
The thin canes of Alphonse Karr, aka bambusa multiplex, grow with striking yellow and green stripes. In young plants they look pink and green instead. The plentiful clusters of narrow green leaves are also very attractive.
Because it grows in clumps, this type of bamboo can create a very thick screen if the culms, or shoots, are planted close together. It can grow to heights of 55 feet when well-watered and fertilized. Of course, if you want shorter culms, it can be trimmed.
Alphonse Karr is easy to grow, whether you want to use it as a bold centerpiece or to add privacy by screening off all or part of your yard. It will even grow in a pot or container. This plant grows very quickly and can be established within 18-24 months.
Because it's a clumping bamboo, Alphonse Karr will not spread and take over your yard, even though it grows quickly.
Alphonse Karr should be planted in full sun or partial shade. It prefers a moist, fertile soil. If you water your bamboo every week during the first couple of years, this will help it to become well established in your yard. Pruning, by removing ageing or dead culms, will help the plant direct its energy towards new, stronger growth. Fertilizing in the spring will also help.
Once your bamboo is established it won't require much care. Putting the effort in over the first couple of years will be well worth it, as you'll end up with a beautiful, pet-friendly bamboo screen or centerpiece to brighten up your yard and add privacy.
This drought-tolerant plant is a great choice for Florida because it can cope with full sun and our summer weather. It is hardy in Florida's climate, so it will remain in good condition over the winter as well.
