Plant of the Month: Firebush

Firebush, or Hamelia Patens, is a high-growing shrub that thrives in any Gainesville Landscape. Native to South and Central America, there are sixteen different cultivars, each with its own unique features. Most varieties are tall with full, lush foliage and bright red flowers that look like fireworks. Even the dwarf varieties, that grow much shorter, still have the characteristic blooms. In South Florida, Hamelia can reach up to fifteen feet tall! While it is possible for them to grow to these impressive heights, they're best kept to between five and eight feet tall.
